Suomi Koulu

Suomi Kuolu

Suomi Kuolu is currently inactive.  If you are a Finnish parent or teacher in the Berkeley area who is interested in starting up this group again, please contact kati.p.schenker@gmail.com

Th mission of Suomi Kuolu is to foster Finnish culture and language, Suomen kulttuuri ja kieli, as a vital part of family life for children which one or more parents with Finnish roots. We aim to provide contact with the Finnish language, and generate interest in keeping traditions and culture alive, all in a warm, safe, and welcoming environment.  "Hei, olen myös suomalainen ja puhun suomea!" Music, visual arts, literature, dance, theater, crafts, and games form part or the curriculum.

Suomi-koulu welcomes all children ages 2-12. Previous Finnish language skills are not necessary, but are very helpful. Parents' continual help and input are crucial; parents volunteer and bring their own experience and knowledge to our meetings. It is also important that they continue to speak and read in Finnish at home, according skill and ability. Suomi-koulu has a library of books in Finnish for kids ages 0-16, as well as some books for parents.

We meet approximately two Sundays per month from September through May (observing various holidays and school breaks) in the Cafe at the Finnish Hall. Occasionally we go on field-trips elsewhere (nature areas, FAHA, ice-skating, special performances, and more!) Fall semester ends with the Finnish Hall Christmas party with puuro, ihanimpia joululauluja, and a näytelmä (play) presented by Suomi Koulu children.

Lukukausimaksu, or tuition, is $30 per semester for the first child, and $20 for each additional child.
